36 Weeks Pregnant: Ready-to-Go Week for Dads
The baby is shedding most of the downy lanugo hair and the vernix coating. Many first babies 'drop' lower into the pelvis in the coming weeks.
Your to-do list this week
- Run the final check: bags packed, car seat installed and checked, gas tank above half, route known, phone numbers saved.
- Send the work handover document and set your out-of-office message, ready to switch on.
- Set up the text list: who gets the first message, and who waits for the second.
- Get your own sleep in the bank. Seriously: early nights this week.
"What are you most nervous about for the birth, and what would help?" Then share yours. Fear shrinks when it's said out loud.
The baby this week
Almost six pounds, the baby is shedding most of the fine lanugo hair and the waxy vernix coating (NHS). Many first babies move lower into the pelvis over the next few weeks, which is called “dropping” or lightening (Mayo Clinic).
How she may be feeling
Most practices move to weekly checkups now. She’ll likely have the group B strep swab between 36 and 37 weeks (ACOG). If the baby has dropped, she may breathe more easily but feel more pressure and need the bathroom constantly.

The text list
Decide now who gets the “we’re heading in” message (often nobody, or one person), who gets the “baby’s here” message, and who waits for a call. Nothing goes on social media until she says so. Draft the messages so you’re not composing them in a recovery room.

Frequently asked questions
What does it mean when the baby drops?
The baby settles lower into the pelvis, often called lightening. It can happen a few weeks before labor in first pregnancies, or not until labor in later ones. She may breathe more easily but feel more pressure low down.
