26 Weeks Pregnant: Eyes Opening, Visitors Plan and Car Seats
The baby's eyes are starting to open, and the baby may startle at loud noises. Brain wave activity for hearing and vision is increasing.
Your to-do list this week
- Research car seats that fit your car and your stroller. Install one before 36 weeks, and get the install checked.
- Draft visitor rules for the hospital and the first two weeks home, then agree on them together.
- Volunteer to be the 'bad cop' with family about visitors and baby holding. It's your job, not hers.
- If there's a baby shower, offer to handle the logistics she doesn't want.
"Who do we want to see in the hospital and the first two weeks, and for how long?" Decide on rules like hand-washing, no visitors who are sick, and short visits.
The baby this week
About the weight of a head of lettuce, the baby’s eyes are beginning to open, and the baby may startle at loud sounds (NHS). Brain activity related to hearing and sight is ramping up (Mayo Clinic).
How she may be feeling
The uterus is pushing up against her lungs and stomach, so shortness of breath and heartburn are common. Practice contractions may come more often. Sleep keeps getting harder; extra pillows and a cool room help.
Choose a car seat
You can’t drive home from the hospital without one, and it’s easier to choose now than to panic-buy at 38 weeks. The AAP recommends rear-facing from the first ride. A few practical points:
- All seats sold in the U.S. pass the same federal crash test. Higher prices buy convenience and features, not a basic safety pass.
- Fit matters most: fit to your car, fit to your baby, and whether you can install it correctly every time.
- Infant seat or convertible? Infant seats click in and out of a base and onto many strollers. Convertible seats stay in the car and last years longer.
- Don’t buy used unless you know the full history, it’s never been in a crash, and it’s not expired.
The car seat stage finder explains what comes next as your child grows, and our installation basics guide covers the first install.
Set the visitor rules now
After the birth, your partner will be exhausted, healing, possibly learning to breastfeed, and in no mood to host. Decide together, now, while it’s calm:
- The hospital: who, if anyone, visits, and when you’ll send the first photo.
- The first two weeks: short visits, by invitation, no drop-ins.
- Health rules: wash hands, no visitors with a cold, and current vaccines for people spending lots of time with the baby, if that matters to you (talk to your pediatrician).
- Help over hosting: visitors bring food or do a chore; they don’t need to be entertained.
Then volunteer to enforce it. Telling your own mother to wait a week is your job, not hers.

Frequently asked questions
Should we buy an infant seat or a convertible seat first?
Either is safe if it fits the baby and your car and you install it correctly. Infant seats click into a base and many strollers, which is convenient. Convertible seats last longer but stay in the car. All U.S. car seats must meet the same federal crash standard.
